Benzene and chemical structure

Posted 7th Sep 2018

Happy (belated) birthday to German organic chemist Friedrich August Kekulé, who was born on this day in 1829. He founded the theory of chemical structure, including that Carbon atoms can link to each other, and discovered the six-membered ring structure of Benzene.

Archibald Scott Couper then independently came up with the first molecular formulas with lines symbolising the bonds that connect atoms. Now you can make up your own 3D molecular models using our kits!

A Benzene model can be created with either flexible or rigid double bonds. Check out this Cochranes of Oxford model, showing the double bonds in black.
