First Nobel Prize for Chemistry

Posted 30th Aug 2018

The first person to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff, born this day (30 August) in 1852. His pioneering work in chemical kinetics, reaction equilibria and stereochemistry included formulating the theory of the tetrahedral carbon atom. See our Orbit tetrahedral carbon atom pictured!

He received the first Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1901 for his work with solutions. He demonstrated that very dilute solutions closely follow the same mathematical laws that desrcibe the bahaviour of gases.
